Lagers

14.12.16

As a beer style, lager has an unfortunate image of being mass produced, tasteless and boring. However, we believe that there is more to lager than this. We have selected lagers that showcase the different elements of this style, and will appeal to lager drinkers and fans of other styles too.

Brooklyn Lager, American amber lager, 5.2% ABV
This Vienna style lager is amber-gold in colour, and displays a firm malt centre, supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by dry hopping during the long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavourful beer which is smooth and refreshing.

Victory Prima Pils, German style pilsner, 5.3% ABV
Victory Brewing Company was started in Pennsylvania in 1996 by two former home-brewers who had studied brewing in Munich. With heaps of whole flower European hops and fine German malts, Prima Pils has loads of earthy herbal noble hop character with subtle malt complexity in the aroma. The flavour is very hop forward with ample bitterness, which is balanced by the malt to give a clean finish.

Lost and Grounded, Running with Sceptres, 5.2% ABV
Lost and Grounded are based in Bristol, and having already gained a wealth of experience in the beer industry, started brewing in July 2016. They are particularly fascinated by the precision of German brewing and the idiosyncratic nature of Belgian beers. We were especially lucky to pick up this case of Running with Sceptres, as it was one of the first to come off their new bottling line. This beer combines Vienna, Pilsner and Caramalts with a huge whack of hops to create what the brewery calls a “Special Lager Beer”.

Schlenkerla, Helles Lagerbier, 4.3% ABV
This beer is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoked malt makes it a unique representation of the classic Bavarian Helles beer style.
